b) Basic Preparedness for Earthquake

1. Develop a plan for your building or revise it if you already have one

•Construct your building in line with settlement plans and suggestions of competent institutions and scientific organizations and check the building codes to ensure that your building meets current seismic safety standards
•Do not make unauthorized extensions to your building like constructing additional floors or balconies; avoid non-permitted repairs.

2. Prepare a plan for use after earthquake

•You may be separated from your family, relatives or beloved ones during an earthquake. Pick place(s) to reunite with your family members after the earthquake. This place may be the house of a relative, the school, mosque or park in your street.
•Put the telephone number and name of the meeting place at an easy place, so that your relatives can quickly know where to find you.
•Example: WE ARE IN THE XYZ PLACE THE ABC FAMILY
•Write this information on a piece of paper and ensure that all family members have it.

3. Keep the documents bearing important information about you and your family members (IDs, title deeds, etc.) in a safe place that would not be affected by fire or collapse

4. Take safety measures within your house

During an earthquake, stay away from heavy furniture, appliances, large panes of glass, shelves holding heavy objects, and masonry veneer (such as the fireplace). These items tend to fall or break and can injure you. Usually, a hallway is one of the safest places if it is not crowded with objects. Kitchens and garages tend to be the most dangerous. Also know the safest place in each room. It will be difficult to move from one place to another during a severe earthquake.

•Identify the safest spots in your house and tell your family members about these spots to avoid panic during earthquake. Safe spots can be inside corners at the intersection of two walls, under a sturdy table.
•Move anything, which may block an escape route in case of an emergency.
•Remember to protect your head while leaving the building. (You can put a piece of wood or a thick book on your head.)
•Always know the possible ways to exit your house and workplace in emergency situations.
•Know the location of the shutoff valves for water, gas, and electricity, and how to operate the valves

5. Make a security plan for the furniture

Bolt heavy furniture, water tank, bookcase and shelves to the wall or ground. Keep heaviest objects at lower shelves. Put latches on cupboards to keep them closed during shaking and fix strong catches to cupboards.

•Fix television, radio, stereo equipment, computer and portable equipments in kitchen. Ensure that vases, glasses, plates, etc. are safely placed.
•Secure all furniture or devices that might damage the gas and water pipes when collapsed.
•Keep flammable and chemical substances in a safe cabinet away from heat.
•Keep in place an emergency bag near the exit, which contains things that you might urgently need (blanket, clothes, water, canned food, whistle, flashlight, scissors, battery-powered radio, etc.)
•Keep a first aid kit together with emergency medical materials and medicines.

6. Earthquake Drills

By planning and practicing what to do before an earthquake occurs, you and your family can learn to react correctly and automatically when the first jolt or shaking begins.

Have each family member learn the safe spots in each room. Reinforce this knowledge by physically placing yourselves in these locations. This is a very important step for children. Acting out what they are taught will help them remember what to do in case you are not beside them at the critical time.

What To Do
• Stand or crouch in a strong supported doorway, or
• Get under a sturdy table or desk, or
• Brace yourself in an inside corner of the house

In the days that follow your first drill, hold surprise drills. Call out EARTHQUAKE from wherever you are and have each family member respond by moving to the safest place. Once a month, let a child call the surprise earthquake drill and follow through with what you've learned. Test each other. Was there one choice that was safest? Did anyone pick a place that could be sealed shut or blocked off by falling objects?

Finally, imagine what you may experience after a major earthquake and what your first actions should be. You will probably be on your own for several days after an earthquake because emergency personnel cannot get to you.

Be prepared for aftershocks. These may be nearly as strong as the initial earthquake. Take cover quickly if shaking begins again.

If you smell gas, get to the gas and water mains and turn them off. Do not light matches or candles to look for damage.

Be prepared to deal with the emotional needs of family members. Stay close enough to touch and comfort each other. Talk about what happened and be sure to encourage your children to talk about their feelings.

7. Consciousness

The most important thing to do during an earthquake is to have knowledge and awareness on earthquake and know what to do. Each conscious move increases your chances to live.
